Kilauea, whose peak rises just around 30 miles from my home, resumed erupting in the summit caldera in December 2024. As September begins, there have been 32 eruption “episodes,” including some very dramatic fountaining reaching heights of over 1200 feet. Of the 32, I have observed 14 and captured a very large number of photos and videos. I began to create summary videos, and have settled on producing them in three month intervals.

Just amazing … breathtaking. The first video ends on my birthday eruption! Mostly I just love, in this time when human personalities loom so large, the power of the earth to demonstrate what true power is
It’s the power of creation, and I also know from previous eruptions that it’s the power of destruction. It’s the power of beauty with the power to destroy beauty. And, of course, it’s literally a thin place on the Earth. It’s hard to avoid identifying a personality – and I don’t really try very hard.
And so the balance of the birds brings us back to small hopefulness.
